It hurts now, but one day it will be your warm up – Rocky
So today I visited Fox Gym. A very un-Dutch gym. As I said it would be an experience outside of my comfort zone and that it was. I drove there early morning as that is the time I want to go to the gym. So this way I could also experience how many people are normally there. They do day passes, so entering the gym is as simple as buying a day pass. “There is the dressing room and the toilets and upstairs are the lockers and the cardio” and there I went. Just one but… there were soooo many weight lifting machines I had never seen before! So it was great that they just leave you to do your own routine. I like that, just being able to train without having someone breathing in your neck. That’s like entering a shop and having people ask you all the time if you can find what you are looking for. “Just browsing thank you”.
Just a slight problem that I have no idea how the machines work. With some I couldn’t even figure out how you should sit/stand/hang/? on them. So I figured I would start doing some cardio and just chill, feel and look at other people using the heavy stuff. So I went for the bike. How hard can that be right? So I press the Quick Start button. Nothing happens… I start looking for the On-switch. Nowhere to be found. Until a big musculair guy behind me says you need to just sit and ride, then it’ll start working. “Ahhhh….ok. Thanks!” And he says “No worries, not so long ago I was looking for the on-switch too”. Ok, so if I don’t know how to, there’s always someone willing to explain.
Still scared to sit on a machine upside down, I decide after a good bike ride to have a chat with the lady behind the bar. What are the options, what can I buy, how much does it cost, etc. They’re not that expensive, have good options, but I need some time with a Personal Trainer (PT) before I can get started. And PT’s are expensive. Not just here btw, anywhere. But it would mean I get started in the right way. I knew what I wanted to know. Can’t go home yet, that would look silly. The devices in the lower gym still looked scary, so better stay away from them for now. Let’s go back upstairs to the cardio and some old weightlifting machines. Had a look at the old ones… Nope, don’t know how to. Ok, better go for a walk then before I go home. So went on the treadmill. Men… Normally you feel “the woman” in the gym on the cardio machines. Well, not in this gym. Everyone was downstairs weight lifting and I was on the treadmill. Felt a bit silly.
But, no big deal, because when I was there nobody made me feel like I was out of place. I easily had triple the amount of fat of the people around me, but nobody looked at me like I did. Whereas the other way around, when you are a bodybuilder and you go to a regular gym, people stare at you and some are even offended. I felt very welcome in this bodybuilder gym. And I was fascinated by the normality of looking at yourself in the mirror and flexing your muscles. These are people proud of their bodies and not afraid to show them. That is a feeling I would like to have. And I do believe that the people you surround yourself with are the people you learn from. So, a good place for me to be.
But, it’s a 30 min drive to the gym, so I travel an hour to hit the gym for an hour. On the other hand, I can do that all before the other gym opens. So tomorrow I hit the second gym. They have a swimming pool and also do group lessons. And they are only a 10 min drive from my home. But like I said, they don’t open until 9AM, so no early morning sporting with them. More news tomorrow.
