I made a choice today. And because I made a deal with myself that I would go to the gym every day this week, I made myself feel like a failure. When in fact this is not failure, this is choosing for yourself and the ones you love. While writing this the second thought is “and what if that’s just another excuse?” So I will just stop blaming myself. Sometimes life gets in the way of your goals. I have done three days of gym in a row and my body is feeling it. Besides that I have an inflammation on my leg which prevents me from moving normally and from swimming. So I choose myself today.
Fitness is like a relationship. You can’t cheat and expect it to work – Unknown Apparently it takes about 3 weeks to create a habit, but at least 3 months to change your lifestyle. Well, I just entered a gym for 6 months. Think I’m covered? I chose the last gym I visited. The fact that it’s so close that I won’t have any excuse not to visit it every day and even on off days they have a swimming pool to enjoy. So I’m going for 5 days of training and 2 days of relaxation in the gym. Today was the first day. I went in, started with a 10 minute cardio session and then went on to the machines. Although I didn’t follow the exercises out of the book I read, I did keep to the muscle groups that were in the schedule. So today was arms and calves. I added the lower back myself, as that has always been an issue for me. It felt good being at the gym. Still a bit too self-conscious, looking at people and wondering if I look silly. But my conclusion was that nobody really cares what other people are doing. […]
“If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” – Thomas Jefferson Gym number two. Today I visited the second gym I chose. The sign outside said come in for a tour, you won’t be disappointed. So I went in and asked for a tour. Wow! That gym is new and looks like you stepped into a gym in Manhattan, New York. They don’t only have a gym with all the equipment you can imagine, but they have a separate part for everyone who’s really serious about weight lifting and they have a pool! And not only a pool, but also a Sauna, a Turkish bath and tanning beds. So not only everything for effort, but also for relaxation. After getting the tour I decided I might as well have my first lesson at the same time. So I paid a small fee and a personal trainer (PT) guided me from the first step into the door. And the first step was onto the scale… But, the most important things here was the fat percentage. So now I know the fat percentage in my body is 42.8% or 46.4kg or 100 pounds. […]
It hurts now, but one day it will be your warm up – Rocky So today I visited Fox Gym. A very un-Dutch gym. As I said it would be an experience outside of my comfort zone and that it was. I drove there early morning as that is the time I want to go to the gym. So this way I could also experience how many people are normally there. They do day passes, so entering the gym is as simple as buying a day pass. “There is the dressing room and the toilets and upstairs are the lockers and the cardio” and there I went. Just one but… there were soooo many weight lifting machines I had never seen before! So it was great that they just leave you to do your own routine. I like that, just being able to train without having someone breathing in your neck. That’s like entering a shop and having people ask you all the time if you can find what you are looking for. “Just browsing thank you”. Just a slight problem that I have no idea how the machines work. With some I couldn’t even figure out how you should […]
So in my life I’ve been to a couple of gyms before. When you go there, they give you a diet and they give you a schedule. Mostly cardio. That has never worked for me and I’ve never liked doing cardio. So I didn’t want to do that anymore. I did some research. Asked some friends, both from the USA as from my own country. And especially the reply from the States was clear. Apparently lifting weights and training with weights is much more normal there then it is over here. So I went looking for a school that trained with Indian Clubbells and Mace bells. Well, they don’t exist over here. And the reason they told me was because their effect had yet to be proven. Best thing I could find was a kettle bell school, but it had limited hours of business. That weren’t going to work for me. So dead end there. But weight lifting in general then? It seemed as though the bodybuilders were shunned from ordinary people gyms. Well, actually when you do some research it really is true. Bodybuilders have their own gyms or they have a separate floor where they are banned to. […]
It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your front door. You step out on to the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you’ll be swept off to. — J. R. R. TOLKIEN I’ve spend the last couple of years trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I can tell you, that’s not easy when there’s so many things you like to do and are good at. So I ended up identifying 3 subject that keep popping up in all the things I’m interested in: Creative, Leadership, Discoveries. But leadership is not just about leading others. It’s also about leading yourself. So that’s what I’m going to do. It’s time to take back charge of my life. And I’m starting with my health and body. You’ve probably seen all the transformational commercials and promotions of products too? Well some of these images are true and most of them did not achieve that (solely) by using the products their photos are promoting. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy in my body which is already a big accomplishment for me. But for years I have been interested in weightlifting and I’ve […]
